Rangers Take 2 Out of 3; Loewen On the Shelf
It was an ugly day at the Yard on Sunday.Well, in perhaps one of the longest, frustrating, exciting, and heart-breaking nine-inning game that I have ever had to sit through, the Orioles valiantly came back from a four run deficit late; however, they narrowly missed defeating the Rangers, 11-10. The game star! ted off ugly, and only got worse as Radhames Liz, who had managed to win a few game despite finding himself in trouble had his luck run out Sunday as he only pitched a little less than four innings.
The offense came together, but ten walks by Baltimore pitching allowed Texas to pile on the runs. Down by in the eighth, our usually reliable relievers, Jim Johnson and George Sherrill let the flood gates open, along with a huge Freddie Bynum error that only made things worse.
The Orioles used the long ball -- three in total, including a three-run shot by Nick Markakis in the 8th, and solo shots by Melvin Mora and Kevin Millar in 9th; however, Oriole Magic just came up a bit short.
Markakis, MacPhail and The Art of the Deal...
Keith Van Valkenburg of the Sun via his blog, "The Life of Kings", gives us another viewpoint concerning the way Andy MacPhail does business and his attempt to sign Nick Markakis to a long-term deal.
We all know MacPhail can be deliberate, methodical, intrepid and yet -- that word, again ... slow -- however, I'd prefer this approach at times rather than the quick, let-get-it-done and without covering all the bases way of thinking.
However, if you're Nick Markakis, you're probably saying, "why can't I get what's mine..."
Well, I'll go into what Van Valkenburg says about Markakis and his anticipation of a deal:
While it's true that the Orioles have plenty of leverage right now, the longer the team waits, the more valuable Markakis becomes. Literally, each day that passes is a day his value goes up. Maybe it's by $100, maybe it's $100,000, but the point is, he isn't getting less expensive the longer you wait. This is a stock tha! t's only going to climb in value over the next 10 years. The fact that the two sides say negotiations are moving very slowly suggests, to me, that they are light years apart and that the Orioles haven't yet decided to get realistic about Markakis' value. When Tampa Bay locked in Longoria for six years at $17 million plus a number of option years even though he'd only played six major league games, it suddenly became the smartest deal in baseball.I'll never understand where the principals are coming from -- I'm just a fan, with a decent job and limited athletic talent -- and it drives me wild to hear billionaires, millionaires, and soon to be millionaires squabble and whine over money along with contracts. At this point, MacPhail is doing h! is job and trying to build the team in his own image; meanwhile, Markakis wants to get paid and have some financial security.
The player gets financial security and peace of mind, and the team gets a gigantic bargain later in the contract when the player is playing for half of what he's worth on the open market. Fausto Carmona, Robinson Cano and Jake Peavy signed similar deals before they became arbitration eligible. Conventional thinking in baseball has changed. The rules might allow teams to pay their young stars the league minimum, but that doesn't make it wise.
Markakis got married last year and plans to make his home in Baltimore year-round. Right n! ow is ex actly the time in his life when he wants to make certain his family will be taken care of forever. He's not going to starve on half a million a year, but also might not be able to buy that dream house he wants just yet for his family (putting down permanent roots in Baltimore). And while that might seem, to most of us, like an absurd thing to worry about in this economic climate, it might tick off a professional athlete who has already proven he's one of the best in the league. The first $25 million matters a lot more than the next $25 million. If nothing else, it gives him immediate peace of mind and lets him go into spring training without a single distraction.
I'm an advocate of giving Nick Markakis a deal sooner, rather than later -- not because I'm feeling sorry for or want him to be secure -- because he's shown himself to be one of the best right fielders in baseball, and he may not have reached the top of his athletic ceiling.
He's now established as a cornerstone of the franchise, he's young, plus wants to be with the organization, so let's just have him content and focused only on baseball now.

Can You Believe This? The Eagles & Cardinals in The NFC Championship?
Everyone, raise your hands -- I mean raise them real high -- if you any of you picked either the Eagles or the Cardinals to play in the NFC Championship. I sure as hell didn't.The Philadelphia Eagles beat the New York Giants 20-14 this afternoon up I-95 in New Jersey, and then Cardinals whooped up on Carolina Panthers last night, 33-13.
I'm stunned. Between the Ravens win and what happened this weekend, I don't know what to expect next week. I real! ly hope Pittsburgh loses; however, I don't see that happening against the Chargers.
It should be one hell of a game for Baltimore next week, assuming Pittsburgh wins.

According to CSN Philly:
Flyer prospect Ladislav Scurko has been accused of murdering a hockey referee over failure to repay a debt.
According to Slovak TV, the 23-year-old center, who was a sixth-round pick of the Flyers in 2004, has been charged with stabbing referee Marek Liptag 14 times.
Liptag's decomposed body was reportedly dumped in a shallow grave in a forest where it was found. The killing is believed to have occurred months ago off a roadway near Kosice, Slovakia, according to newspaper reports.
Scurko, who is Slovakian, played briefly for former Flyer general manager Russ Farwell in Seattle.
Flyers GM Paul Holmgren said the club was withholding comment until more information was known.

Why Rangers Fans Should Stop Worrying About Signing Dubinsky
On Monday I posted a comment on Twitter that if anyone was interested in "Guest Blogging" on Puck Central that they should contact me. I was surprised to receive a handful of e-mails within the next few minutes with several people interested in posting their thoughts or writing an article. Nothing is set in stone but there will be a few guest bloggers posting their thoughts (hockey related - not necessarily Rangers related) in the next few weeks. Here is the first....

What? It's September 1st, and Brandon Dubisnky hasn't been signed, yet? OH NOES!!!!! Surely a sign of the apocalypse, no? No, no it's not.
As most of us know, Dubi did not have the leverage that Ryan Callahan did going into his RFA season, and thus was never going to get the attention early in the off-season. Also, as a center, which I believe take longer to develop than wings, Dubi hasn't come as obviously far as Cally has. That's not a knock on Dubi at all, just my opinion what that each has achieved in their short, but strong, careers. What I do believe, is that Brandon Dubinsky is a key cog to the long term future of the organ-eye-zay-shun, and this is a major reason why the signing is taking so long.
Glen Sather and company (who know who actually does the n! itty gritty stuff) knew they had more time to work with Dubi a! nd his c ontract, but they also have a responsibility to the organization to run down all the potential free agents/trade possibilities before concentrating on their #1 center: Brandon Dubinsky (hey, see what I did there! Dubi = #1 center). What this all means is that in all likelihood Dubi will start the season on a short-term contract (1 year?) at something north of his qualifying offer of $698,000 (maybe 2-3x), as they did with Henrik Lundqvist a couple of years ago. In January, as Dubi continues to prove he can center Marian Gaborik and Ryan Callahan as the top center, Slats et al will get down to he business of a long term, multi million dollar contract. Unfortunately, the inscrutable fact here is the salary cap situation the Rangers are in, and Dubi & Slats need to figure out what the magic numbers are that allow Dubi to stay in blue until he becomes a free agent in a few years without causing more cap headaches. Is it right for Slats to force this position on Dubi? N! o, but it's a reality that he, and pretty soon Marc Staal, have to face if they wish to remain in Broadway Blue. Besides, Slats has one more cigar up that sleeve of his: Mark Messier.
Now, does anyone really think that His Captain-ness was brought in to be Slats' errand boy, or otherwise passively learn the ins-and-outs of being a GM? No, and if you did please make your way to an Islanders blog until you are recalled. Seriously, if Garth Snow can become a relatively competent GM in the matter of a few months, I am sure Mess is more than capable of handling the duties.
ANYWAY, I've been thinking a lot of Mess' return to the Garden, and I believe it is an extremely astute and clever decision by Slats (with much input from Adam Graves I am sure) to give Dubi a reason to be being patient with the contract negotiation process. Why? What could this reason be? Dubi has the promise to be a physical center with strong leadership qualities and pot more tha! n his share of goals and assists. Sound familiar? While Mess! will un doubtedly learn much about running a team, and be constantly rumored to replace John Tortorella at the first protracted slump of the season, I think an unofficial, but primary, role will be to tutor young Dubisnky in what it means to be the #1 center for the Rangers on and off the ice. The first sign of this will be replacing the canned, post-game cliches Dubi picked up from Gomez with more honest, but team strengthening, comments to the media coupled with a bit more snarl on the ice. This potential relationship with a mentor like Messier could go a very long way to easing the sting of taking a less than desired contract, and also send a huge message about what it means to be a team player. I believe the organization sees Dubi has the to Drury's "C", and who better to prime Dubi for this honor than Mess himself?
Finally, EVERYONE is saying the right things here, and as Steve Zipay and other beat writers have mentioned, Dubi probably wouldn't be on the ice this w! eek if he didn't think something was coming soon. This is a non-issue that has been fanned into a California wild fire, mostly because we're bored after all the drama happened so early in the off-season. I honestly believe that not only will Dubi be signed in short-order, but we are witnessing the grooming of one of those truly rare athletes. He may not be the flashiest player on the team, but I can't think of another player who may have more of a long term impact on the team than young Dubinsky, and I have little doubt about what the future holds for him.

"CONI telah menarik kasus Fabio Cannavaro tekait dengan temuan dari penuntut yang juga meminta untuk menghentikan kasus ini," begitu pernyataan CONI seperti dilansir Reuters.
Kepastian ini tentunya menjadi kabar gembira bagi Canna. Sebelumnya sang pemain telah mengatakan cukup lega dapat terbebas dari tudingan doping sehingga dapat fokus dalam bermain.

But, Now Arsenal must fight manchester united, the champions of seasonn before. This match runs very hard and very attractive. Arsenal fottball club shows ann ofensive sceme in their match. They have many chances to make a goal, but they did'nt.
Finally, Adre Arshavin make a good goal for Arsenal. He shoot the ball from the outside of penalty box. unfortunately, Arsenal cant hold their victory! , Manuel Aluminia drops wayne rooney in the penalty box and mu gets penalty shoot. Wayne Rooney makes a score for Manchester United.
And then, Abou Diaby maked his own goal for manchester united. match score change 2-1 for manchester united. This is become the first loose of Arsenal in this season in Premier League. But, Arsenal Manager, Arsene Wenger disappointed to refree who did'nt give penalty shoot for Arsenal when Arshavin was dropped by Darrent Fletcher.
Even, Aresene Wenger was exiled from the bench to tribune because of his extremely protest. This victory brings United up to the third in clasement.

Lennon leads right winger race
Fabio Capello picks on form, which is good news for Aaron Lennon. Not so long ago the Spurs flyer appeared totally out of the England picture, with Theo Walcott, David Beckham and Shaun Wright-Phillips ahead of him in the pecking order.
Ashley Young, nominally a left winger, has also featured ahead of Lennon in England squads this season, but the Villa man's form has deserted him in line with his club's fortunes, whilst Wright-Phillips and Walcott are injured. Lennon is perhaps in the sort of form that would have earned him a call above his rivals if they were all available.
There won't be room for all of the above in England's 2010 World Cup squad, so this pair of matches is a good chance for Lennon to stake his claim.
Lennon of course featured in the 2006 tournament, when it appeared to be only a matter of time before he took over from Beckham long-te! rm.
He had just completed a stunning début season for Spurs and those matches in Germany seemed to represent a changing of the guard, not least when Lennon finished the infamous quarter final against Portugal on the pitch, with Beckham in tears on the sidelines.
However, things change quickly in football and Lennon's development is a classic example of a rollercoaster career. He reached a plateau at Spurs, unable to cope with the extra attention from defenders and frustrated with his ability to play the correct final ball.
His crossing has improved this season. The occasions when he drills a cross above his colleagues' heads have reduced in number and his running at opponents has also developed, thanks perhaps to his increased experience and new-found ease at playing on the left or in the centre behind the front two.
Goals have also started to flow, which was the one area his rivals for an England right wing berth were sup! erior. L ennon is now calm in front of goal and has recently revealed an excellent long range shot.

Pirlo Ingin Terus Hormati Kontrak
MILAN - Peluang pindah Andrea Pirlo sebelumnya dikuak oleh bos AC Milan Silvio Berlusconi. Namun, pihak pemain bersangkutan malah menegaskan belum berniat ke mana-mana.Keberadaan Carlo Ancelotti, yang mantan pembesut Milan, di Chelsea sudah bikin masa depan Pirlo dispekulasikan. Galliani: Pemain Milan Tak Saling Bicara

Rafa - Reds starting to fire
The Reds suffered two defeats in the opening three league games to lead some to question their title credentials this term.
But Benitez's side have now won three times on the bounce in both the Premier League and Europe.
While Torres was below-par in the midweek UEFA Champions League win over Debrecen, Benitez believes it is only a matter of time before his star striker is back to his very best.
Speaking ahead of Saturday's clash with West Ham, the Reds boss said: "Fernando is not at his best, although he is trying very hard. But he can play better and he knows this. That is positive because he realises and I am confident in him.
"He is much more positive, he is working with the rest of the players and creating space for them. We will soon see the very best from him.
"Our players are starting to find their form, Dirk Kuyt is scoring, Yossi Benayoun is scoring, and we have started well in Europe.
"It is only a ! matter of time before Fernando starts to score more regularly.
"We have plenty of options now, most of our players are fit so the choice is good for me when you have more players available.
"It can be a headache, but a nice one with a variety of players to chose from."
Tough game
The Reds beat Gianfranco Zola's West Ham 3-0 at Upton Park last term but Benitez knows it will be tough on Saturday.
He said: "Last season we won well at West Ham but it was a strange game because we scored in the first minute and that meant the home side had to come out more and more and we were able to score on the break.
"West Ham do not concede too many goals, they have a good manager who wants the game played in the right way and they have a great tradition for playing that way. It will be difficult."
But Benitez believes his side's confidence is back.
He said: "I hope our team is beginning to take shape after a ! difficult start to the season. In the Champions League game th! is week we had 25 chances, things are improving.
"Now we have our confidence back and we must build on that and keep winning games.
"I am happier with the way things have improved. You can see from the mood in training sessions that the players have more confidence because they know we are starting to perform well again.
"We know now that we can win any game. After those two defeats we showed a lot of character to come back from behind twice to win at Bolton, and then we produced a very good performance to beat Burnley before winning in the Champions League this week.
"The players were surprised by what happened at the beginning of the season, but there was so much expectation around at the time."
Panic
He added: "People were saying we were going to win the title. Then we lost two games, as many as we lost all last season in the league, and some people - outside the club - were starting to panic.
"It was no! t easy for the fans at the time, and not easy for the staff and the players. But we were intent on sending out the right message and to getting over that opening spell quickly.
"We needed to show character and experience. And to see the bigger picture. We were told we could not afford to lose again because the title would be gone.
"But I never believed that, we needed to keep our heads and put the small details right.
"Little things can change players' confidence, a late winner like at Bolton, and everyone feels a lot happier about things."

GALLIANI:"OGGI COMINCIAMO A TRATTARE PER BECKS"

SCATTA LA MISSIONE 'MALDINI IN AZZURRO'
Paolo Maldini in azzurro per l'ultima volta? Un'idea che Marcello Lippi valuterà. Il capitano del Milan vanta il record di presenze con la maglia della Nazionale con 126 partite. "Mi farebbe piacere giocare un'ultima partita - ha ammesso ai microfoni di 'Milan Channel' -. Non sarebbe un ritorno in Nazionale, ma l'occasione per la celebrazione di una carriera comunque lunga in azzurro, per questo mi farebbe proprio piacere".
Un'idea "nata spontaneamente - spiega il difensore, 41 anni a giugno -, io non ne sapevo nulla, se e quando potrà esserci la partecipazione a questa gara è una! decisione che spetta a chi di dovere, anche tenendo conto del fatto che il calendario è molto fitto e che, giustamente, il commissario tecnico, Marcello Lippi, deve tenere innanzitutto in considerazione le esigenze della squadra".
"Prenderemo in considerazione un'ipotesi di questo tipo, penseremo a qualcosa - ha detto il ct azzurro intervistato da 'Goal.com' che ha lanciato la campagna per far giocare Maldini nella sfida tra Italia e Brasile - ma al momento è impossibile. INTER OK MA E' ALLARME MANCHESTER
L'Inter batte 2-0 il Genoa a Marassi e lancia un chiaro messaggio alle inseguitrici. E' però allarme difesa in vista di Manchester: Materazzi e Burdisso finiscono ko. Passano 2' e i nerazzurri segnano con Ibrahimovic, che supera Rubinho con un pallonetto. Julio Cesar fa i miracoli poi al 61' il raddoppio di Balotelli: sul suo tiro si avventa Rossi che spinge la palla dentro (completamente?). I rossoblù potrebbero accorciare ma sbagliano la mira.
LA PARTITA
Mourinho preferisce Burdisso a Cordoba per far coppia con Materazzi al centro della difesa. Centrocampo a cinque con Cambiasso e Zanetti a proteggere la retroguardia e Stankovic, Figo e Balotelli piuà avanzati. Ibrahimovic unica punta. Nel Genoa c'è Jankovic nel tridente con Sculli e Milito.
Partenza lampo del Genoa, che con un'azione in velocità manda Thiago Motta al tiro, palla di poco a lato. Pronta la risposta dell'Inter, che trova il vantaggio con Ibrahimovic: lancio di Stankovic per lo sved! ese che prende palla, entra in area e supera Rubinho con un pallonetto. Fatto il gol, la squadra di Mourinho soffre e subisce l'iniziativa dei padroni di casa, aggressivi su ogni pallone e che si trovano sempre in situazione di superiorità numerica. Ma l'Inter appare più solida rispetto a quella vista mercoledì sempre a Marassi con la Sampdoria. Al 16' prima tegola per Mourinho che perde Materazzi per un infortunio alla gamba sinistra, al suo posto entra Cordoba. Dopo la mezz'ora sarà la volta di Burdisso, vittima di uno stiramento al quadricipite. Dentro Muntari, con Cambiasso che indietreggia in difesa. Due brutte notizie per i nerazzurri in vista della trasferta di mercoledì a Manchester. L'Inter, dicevamo, subisce ma regge e deve ringraziare il suo portierone Julio Cesar, autore di due interventi miracolosi prima su colpo di testa di Thiago Motta (21') poi su Biava (45'). Nei minuti di recupero si rivede l'Inter: bella palla di Figo per Ibra, Rubinho esce e sventa il pe! ricolo.
A inizio ripresa il Genoa preme per cercare! di riba ltare il risultato. Al 52' Biava ha un buon pallone ma lo spreca. Gli uomini di Gasperini costringono nella propria metà campo l'Inter, che quando può riparte in contropiede. E al 61' i nerazzurri trovano il raddoppio con Balotelli: tiro di Supermario, arriva Marco Rossi che nel tentativo di respingere la palla la trascina oltre la linea (c'è il dubbio se sia al di là del tutto). Il Genoa spinge e crea delle buone occasioni ma la mira è sbagliata: Marco Rossi e Biava falliscono da ottima posizione. Finisce 0-2 e questa volta Marassi porta bene all'Inter, con il Genoa che rimedia il primo ko interno. E il messaggio alle inseguitrici è chiaro: la squadra di Mourinho c'è.

Aquilani all geared up to prove his worth
Alberto Aquilani is confident his performances for Liverpool will prove Rafa Benitez was right to make him his biggest signing of the summer.
The Italian International is yet to make his Reds debut as he continues to recover from an ankle injury, but he believes once he gets back to full fitness he will prove his worth.
"I know Liverpool have spent millions on signing me but I'm here to prove I'm worth it." the 25-year-old said.
The f! ormer Roma man is also looking forward to playing in the Premier League, which he has so far enjoyed watching from afar.
"It's very good fun watching it, mostly because the matches are never over, and even if you are leading by two or three goals, you still keep attacking," he said.
"I can't say if it is the best football in Europe, but for sure it's the most spectacular, dynamic and challenging.
"And the stadiums, every time I played there, they are beautiful and all have a terrific atmosphere."
He added: "There are champions at this club, such as Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard, who can make the difference at any moment and inspire the team.
"I'm thrilled to play alongside them also because I'm sure they will be able to improve my game."
With World Cup year approaching, the Italian also dismissed claims that moving from his home country may hinder his chances of being selected by Azzurr! i coach Marcello Lippi.
He added: "I don't think! I have more or less chance in the Premier League than in Serie A. I'm confident I can deliver and then it's all up to me,
